I have prepared kalthappam many times but this one was the best!
Super soft, so flavourful and amazingly delicious!
Kalthappam is a rice cake made of ground rice, oil/ghee, jaggery/sugar, fried onions or shallots, coconut flakes and cardamom powder.
This dish can be served for breakfast or as a tea time snack.
Prepration is quite simple with very few basic ingredients available at home.
No oven is required for cooking this dish. All you need is a cooker.
This dish is also called as a 'Cooker Rice cake'. It is prepared easily in a cooker and the mouthwatering aroma spread in the entire kitchen , makes you fall in love with this dish.

Please note:
Here i have used jaggery as per my taste. Use jaggery or sugar as per your preference.
You can add few dry fruits too if you prefer.
Here i have used ghee for that wonderful aroma and taste. You can use oil or butter.
No Baking soda is used in this recipe.

Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup dosa rice (200 gms)
- 1/4 cup coconut
- 3 cardamom
- Salt to taste
- 3/4 cup jaggery ( as needed)
- 2 tbsp ghee
- 3 tbsp chopped coconut pieces
- 1 medium size sliced onion.
Method:
Wash and soak dosa rice for minimum 2 hours.
Add the rice to the grinding jar along with coconut and cardamom.
Grind to a fine paste.
Add 1/2 cup water to the jaggery and boil till all the jaggery is dissolved well in the water .
Keep a sieve above the rice batter and pour the jaggery mixture to the batter.
Mix well. Add salt to taste and mix well to a dosa batter consistency.
Add 2 tbsp ghee to the pressure cooker.
Add sliced onion and fry for 1 minute. Add chopped coconut pieces. Mix well. Fry till it turns golden brown.
Now pour batter to the cooker. Do not mix.
Cover the lid and cook. Make sure that the whistle is removed.
Cook on a very slow flame for 18-20 minutes.
Insert a skewer and make sure it comes out clean.
Delicious kalthappam is ready.
Keep it aside till it cools down.
Gently loosen the edges of the kalthappam and remove from the cooker.
Slice as per your choice.
Super moist, so flavourful and amazingly delicious kalthappam is ready to serve.
Serve hot or cold, it's so yummy!
