Karimeen/Pearl Spot fish/ kalendra losun mirin curry/ garlic pepper curry
Pearl Spot fish which is called as Karimeen in Kerala is considered as a delicacy. This is called as ' kalundra'/ Kalendra in konkani.
This fish is commonly found in backwaters of Kerala and karimeen curry is one of the authentic dishes of Kerala State .
This fish is cooked in many ways. My mom used to make losun - mirin curry . As the name suggests, losun means 'garlic ' and mirin is ' pepper '.
This curry suits so well for this fish as this fish has natural oil which makes this curry so glossy & flavourful.
I just love this fish as it's flesh tastes like chicken so soft & flaky. This fish has a unique taste & flavour which is why this curry is one if my favourite fish curries.
Please note:Use spices as per your preference. You can use a pinch of Fenugreek seeds in masala if you wish.
Recipe:
For 3/4 kg fish
Ingredients for masala:
- 5 -6 red long chillies
- 1-2 red short chillies
- 2 medium onions
- 5-6 flakes of garlic
- 1tsp pepper
- 1/2 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds
- 1/4tsp coriander
- Pinch of mustard
- Pinch of turmeric
- Tamarind as per your choice
- 2-3 tbsp coconut
Ingredients for seasoning:
- 1 small sliced onion
- 4-5 flakes of crushed garlic
- 2 tbsp ghee or oil
Method:
Grind all the ingredients for masala.
Heat 2 tbsp ghee, add sliced onions and garlic. Fry till slight brown.
Add ground masala paste & fry for 2-3 minutes.
Add masala water + required quantity water, salt to taste & boil the gravy. Add fish pieces & boil for just 2-3 minutes.
Delicious karimeen/ kalendra curry is ready.
This fish has natural oil which makes this gravy so glossy.
Serve with boil rice & any veg side dish.
The flesh of this fish is so soft & flaky.
