Sprouted moong/ green gram sukka

Sprouted moong/ green gram sukka

This is the most common, easy, simple dish which is prepared in almost every household.

This healthy, protein rich vegetable is one of the main dishes on a harvest feast menu. ( Monthi fest celebration menu)

The preparation may vary from house to house. Some add ground masala paste, some use masala powders, some like it plain with only some basic seasoning.

Even though it's a common dish,   this simple, easy recipe might help some beginners.

Here is my way of preparing this dish:

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 250 gms of green gram
  • 1 cup coconut( as required)
  • 1 tsp bafat powder
  • 1 tsp sambar powder
  • Salt to taste.
  • 2-3 hog plums ( optional)
  • 2 tbsp tamarind pulp
  • 1 onion ( sliced)
  • 5-6 garlic flakes ( crushed)
  • Few curry leaves.
  • Pinch of mustard seeds
  • 2 tbsp ghee/oil

Method:

Wash & soak green gram for 8-10 hours.

Drain out all the water , cover & keep in a warm, dark place. ( Sprouts well in the microwave)

It will sprout well in 12 -14 hours.

Mix coconut and masala powders &  keep aside.

In a cooking pot heat oil or ghee for seasoning.  Add  mustard seeds, sliced onion, garlic flakes. Fry till slight brown.  Add curry leaves.

Add coconut & fry for 2-3 minutes.

Add sprouted green gram. Mix well.

Add tamarind pulp or hog plums (ambade) (*see note number 2 & 3). Mix well. Add salt to taste.
Add 1/2 cup water. Cover & cook for 10-12 minutes on a medium flame.

Delicious moog sukka/ green gram sukka is ready to serve.
Goes well as a side dish with any meal or with chapathies, dosas.

Tastes awesome as a side dish with fish curry and boiled rice.

Enjoy this delicious dish with your loved ones.

Please note:

1. If you are using hog plums, use less tamarind pulp as the hog plums are sour.  You can use tomatoes instead of hog plums or tamarind pulp.

2. For the harvest feast we use hog plums(ambade) in every dish. They take longer time to cook. ( Tender ones cook fast). So you can wash, clean & crush few hog plums & boil it in a pressure cooker with 1/2 cup water.

3.You can use 2-3 hog plums along with little boiled water for each vegetable  you are cooking.

4. Instead of bafat powder you can use 1 tsp chilli powder, 1/2 tsp coriander power & 1/4 tsp jeera powder.
