Roce / Sweetened Coconut milk with Rice paste

Roce with Sanna

The feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated each year on the eighth of September.

This feast is celebrated as a harvest feast  in Mangalore with many vegetarian dishes.

'Roce' with sanna is one of the most loved  combo  among the harvest feast menu.

The varieties of dishes prepared during harvest festival differ from house to house.

Some people prepare kheer, some prepare vorn/ moong dal payasa  but my mom used to prepare this type of sweet dish called 'Roce'

'Roce' is nothing but the rice paste  cooked in sweet coconut milk and served with sannas.

Preparation is quite simple & easy with few basic ingredients available at home.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raw rice(150ml cup)
  • 1 medium coconut
  • 1/4 kg jaggery (as required)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 tsp Cardamom powder

Method:

Wash & soak rice for 2 hours. Grind to fine paste.

Grind coconut & extract milk.

Keep the 1st extract, 2nd extract & third extract separately.

Add rice paste to the cooking pan with 2nd & 3rd extracts. Add jaggery, salt to taste, mix well & boil.

Keep on stirring till it turns to thick lump free liquid.

Add 1st extract, mix well & boil.  Let the mixture be semi thick.

Finally add cardamom powder & switch off the flame.

Delicious roce is ready.
Serve with sanna.

Enjoy this dish with your loved ones.
