Sajjige-Bajil/Poha-Upma

SAJJIGE- BAJIL/POHA-UPMA

Who doesn't like this yummy spicy poha and hot upma with a cup of tea for morning breakfast?

This is a popular breakfast of southern Karnataka region. Sajjige bajil is a tulu name for poha-upma combo where sajjige means upma & bajil refers to poha.

I grew up eating this delicious combo of sweet & spicy rice flakes ( poha) with mild flavoured rava.

This combo is available in most of mangalorean restaurants & is my hubbys most favourite breakfast.

Here is a step by step recipe for this delicious combo.

BAJIL(POHA) RECIPE:

INGREDIENTS:

(A)

  • 3 cups of rice flakes
  • 1 cup of freshly grated coconut
  • 2 tbsp sugar or jaggery
  • Salt to taste
  • 2-3tsp poha masala*

*POHA MASALA:

(Dry roast 10-12 red long chillies, add 2 tbsp coriander, 1 tsp jeera, few curry leaves and powder. Store in an airtight container.  Use required quantity for the recipe)

You can use sambar powder too instead of poha masala.

INGREDIENTS FOR SEASONING:

  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • 1 medium onion (sliced)
  • Few curry leaves
  • Little mustard
  • Little jeera
  • Few coriander seeds

METHOD:

Red aval/red rice flakes

I have used red aval/ red rice flakes which is healthier than white rice flakes.

Mix jaggery/sugar, coconut & poha masala. Add poha & salt to taste. Mix well.

Prepare seasoning by frying onion in oil/ghee, add mustard, jeera, coriander seeds & curry leaves.

Add this seasoning to the poha mixture & mix well.

Delicious sweet & spicy poha is ready.

SAJJIGE/UPMA RECIPE:

  • 1 cup roasted rava
  • Salt to taste

FOR SEASONING:

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Little mustard
  • Pinch of jeera
  • 1/4tsp urad dal
  • 1 medium size chopped onion
  • 2-3 green chillies
  • Small piece ginger
  • Few curry leaves

METHOD:

You can use roasted rava or can dry roast normal rava & keep aside.

Heat oil in the pan & add all the seasoning ingredients one by one & fry till translucent. Do not burn.

Add 3 cups of water, add salt & bring to boil.

Gently pour rava & stir on a medium flame.

Cover & cook for 2 -3 minutes.

Delicious upma is ready.

You can add little sugar & coconut if 5 wish.

Serve plain or with poha/rice flakes.

Enjoy this delicious breakfast with your loved ones.
