Prawn Kokum Curry


Prawn Kokum curry 


This is one of the tastiest curries loved and appreciated by my family members. 

This curry has a unique flavour & taste which makes this curry so special. 

Here we use soaked dry kokum rinds which gives awesome colour & taste to this curry. This curry is a mixture of spicy, sour  taste with creamy coconut flavour.  

This curry doesn't need any masala paste. Here we use only coconut paste & few masala powders. Hence it can be prepared quickly and easily with very few basic spices. 

My family loves this flavourful curry with boiled rice. This curry goes very well with neer dosa, sanna, dosa or chapati. 

Try this easy recipe & relish this unique flavoured prawn curry. 

Please note:

Use masala powders as per your choice. 

Instead of the masala powders mentioned in the recipe, you can use only bafat powder  for this gravy.

Here i used potatoes. You can use or skip. Or  can add carrot too. 

Soak kokum atleast for 1 hour. 

Use coconut oil for awesome flavour. 


Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 kg prawns
  • 1/4 kg potatoes 
  • Salt to taste 
  • Little turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp kashmiri red chilly powder 
  • 1 tsp coriander powder 
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder/ Jeera powder 
  • 1 cup coconut 
  • 4 cashew nuts 
  • 4-5 kokum rinds 
  • Coriander leaves for Garnishing 

Seasoning Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • Little mustard 
  • Few curry leaves 
  • Big pinch of Fenugreek seeds 
  • 1 large size sliced onion 
  • 2-3 slit green chillies 
  • 1/2" finely chopped ginger 
  • 5 chopped garlic cloves 
  • One finely chopped tomato 

Method:




Wash & soak dried kokum rinds in 1 cup water for a minimum 1 hour. 



Use nicely cleaned and deveined fresh prawns. 



Add salt & little turmeric & keep aside for 10 minutes. 

Grind coconut & cashew nuts to a fine paste & keep aside. 

Heat 2 tb sp coconut oil in a cooking vessel. 
Add mustard, curry leaves, Fenugreek seeds. Fry for 30 seconds. 
Add sliced onion,  chopped ginger, garlic & saute till its slight brown. 
Add tomato & masala powders. Mix well fry for 1-2 minutes. 

Add  coconut paste , mix well. 


Add prawns & potato pieces. Mix well. 
Add water, salt to taste. 


Add kokum water.
Cover & cook for 8-10 minutes. Or till potatoes are cooked well. 


Sprinkle little coriander leaves on top. 

Super delicious, flavourful Prawn Kokum curry is ready to serve. 


It has a unique aroma of spices and nutty flavour of coconut.
