Turmeric Powder

Turmeric powder

Turmeric is a very useful spice which contains bioactive compounds with medicinal properties .

Turmeric powder is made from the underground  stems or rhizomes  of the turmeric plant.

The rhizomes are washed thoroughly, boiled , dried well and powdered.

Boiling the rhizomes enables the starch in the turmeric to gelatinize and also helps in intensifying the color and in uniform distribution of color throughout the rhizome.

Organic Turmeric powder can be prepared easily at home with few turmeric plants. Freshly  prepared turmeric powder has the best aroma & awesome colour .

I grow  turmeric plants in few pots.

The leaves are used to prepare some delicacies of mangalorean region. ( Turmeric leaf Patholi)

Once the plant start drying, we can use the underground stems/rhizomes to prepare organic turmeric powder.

This time i got around 480 grams of underground stems ( rhizomes) and I prepared 190 gms of aromatic , organic turmeric powder.

I have followed simple easy method to prepare this turmeric powder.

Do give it a try & enjoy your own flavourful, organic turmeric powder at home.

Here is a step by step method to prepare turmeric powder easily at home.

Collect turmeric bulbs/rhizomes/ underground stems.

Remove all the  thick hairy attachments  to the bulbs.

Wash thoroughly 4-5 time to get rid of all the mud & sand particles.

No need to peel the skin.

Add enough quantity water to the roots and boil well for 10-12 minutes. (Boiling process will help in intensifying colour and flavor)

Strain the water  & allow the roots to cool.

You can slice these rhizomes  or chop into small pieces. I have used the chopper.

Spread these chopped pieces on a plate or any cloth / sheet and allow it to dry in the sun.

It might take 2-3 days depending on the climatic conditions.  Every evening get the plate inside.

Store it in an air-tight jar.

I got around 190 grams of organic turmeric powder out of 480 grams of rhizomes.
