Tharsule/ Taru buthai losun- mirin curry/ small sardines garlic pepper curry

Tharsule losun-mirin / Taru buthai / Small sardines garlic -pepper curry

This is my mom's most favourite fish curry. Now my favourite too.

Small size sardines are called as 'tharsule' in konkani & ' taru butai' in tulu language. This fish is rich in protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals.

Sardines is a most popular fish which is easily available for reasonable price. But these small size sardines ( baby sardines) are available only during particular season.

This particular curry is called as losun mirin curry / garlic pepper curry which has a unique flavour of garlic and pepper . This curry tastes awesome as these small sardines have natural oil & distinct flavour which makes this gravy so glossy and so yummy.  This curry doesn't suit for large size sardines.

Cutting & cleaning this baby sardines is a difficult task but it is worth the effort  when you relish this curry with hot boiled rice & some vegetable side dish. This curry tastes awesome on the 2nd day when all the spices & flavours are well absorbed .

Please note:

Kindly use spices as per your requirements. We eat less spicy food.

Use ghee or coconut oil for seasoning.

Recipe:

For 1/2 kg tharsule

Ingredients for masala:

  • 5 -6 red long chillies ( byadagi chillies)
  • 2-3 red short chillies( guntur chillies)
  • 2 medium onions
  • 5-6 flakes of garlic
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp jeera
  • 1/4 tsp coriander
  • Pinch of mustard
  • Pinch of turmeric
  • Tamarind as per your choice
  • 2 tbsp coconut

Ingredients for seasoning:

  • 1 small sliced onion
  • 4-5 flakes of crushed garlic
  • 1-2 tbsp ghee

Method:

Select fresh sardines.
Sprinkle 1 tsp salt & gently massage the fish. Leave it aside for 15 minutes.
This method will help in removing the scales easily.

Cut fish , clean & wash well . Keep aside. ( This was cleaned in the fish stall. I don't like to keep eyes and gills)

Grind all the ingredients for masala to a fine paste.

Heat 1-2 tbsp ghee, add sliced onions and garlic.  Fry till slight brown.
Add ground masala paste & fry for 2-3 minutes.

Add masala water + required quantity water , salt to taste & boil the gravy. Add cleaned fish & boil for just 1 minute.
Cover & leave aside for 10 minutes.

Delicious tharsule/ taru buthai curry is ready.

Tastes awesome with hot boiled rice and any vegetable side dish.

Try & enjoy this delicious fish curry with your loved ones.
