Bangude Puli Munchi/ Tangy - Spicy Mackerel Curry

BANGUDE PULI MUNCHI/ TANGY-SPICY MACKEREL CURRY

Bangude puli munchi is a very famous dish of mangalorean cuisine which is loved by most mangaloreans.

'Puli munchi' is a  tulu term which refers to a 'tangy spicy' flavoured curry which i am sure will tickle your taste buds.

This is  my hubby's most favourite fish curry.

Fish is cooked with tangy spicy masala on a slow flame which makes this dish so flavourful & super delicious.

This dish tastes  better on the next day as all the flavours & spices are well absorbed  by  the fish pieces.

The taste depends on the quality of fish you use. Make sure to use fresh mackerels.

(Pls note: we prefer less spicy food. Kindly use spices as per your choice)

RECIPE:

INGREDIENTS:

10 medium mackerel/ bangda fish (cleaned)

A. FOR MASALA:

  • 8-10 Kashmiri red long chillies/ Byadagi chillies
  • 4 red short chillies
  • 1tsp coriander
  • 1/2tsp geera
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 6 garlic flakes
  • 2 medium onions
  • 1/4" ginger
  • 2 tsp coconut ( optional)
  • 1/8 tsp methi
  • 1/2  large lemon size tamarind,
  • little turmeric.

B. For shindap (sliced ingredients)

  • 2 medium onions sliced
  • 1"ginger chopped
  • 8 flakes of garlic chopped
  • 2 -3 slit green chillies ( i have used only one)
  • Few curry leaves.

We need 2-3 tbsp of coconut oil.

METHOD:

Clean & cut mackerels into desired pieces.

Grind all the ingredients under A  to a smooth paste.

Transfer the ground paste to a bowl & add salt to taste & add   2 cups of water to have a semi solid masala  paste.

Keep the ingredients mentioned under B ready.

Now take a cooking vessel, pour 2 tsp oil( i have used coconut oil) add one part of sliced ingredients,  add 1/4th masala paste.

Gently place 4 -5 mackerel pieces.

Again sprinkle chopped ingredients (shindap) on the pieces, pour 2 tsp coconut oil( any oil) pour 1/4th masala.

Add fish pieces.

Repeat this process untill all the masala & fish is layered.

Cover & cook on medium flame till it boils.
Reduce the flame to the lowest & cook for 12-15 minutes.

Delicious bangude puli munchi is ready.

Enjoy this yummy dish with steaming hot boiled rice or with neeru dosa/panpole.

Its spicy, tangy & super delicious.
Enjoy with your loved ones.
